Healthspan:
The New Healthy Aging
Paradigm
From Live Long to Live Well
Healthspan — the measure of how long we live without significant health problems — is emerging as a central cultural theme. GCI Health’s research study, “From Live Long to Live Well: The New Healthy Aging Paradigm,” decodes this transformative shift through robust data, critical insights and audience personas. The study helps brands understand the healthspan mindset, allowing them to evolve their strategies and build new narratives to motivate this health-minded consumer.
Gen Z: The unexpected healthspan driver
Our study upends the belief that older adults are the generation most focused on aging. Instead, the youngest generation, Gen Z, is leading the healthspan revolution. The research shows that Gen Z is not only more familiar with healthspan, they are actively building the foundation for a healthy future buoyed by a sense of control over their aging process.
FAMILIARITY
of Gen Z are “very familiar” with healthspan, outpacing all other groups.
CONTROL
of Gen Z reports a “high degree” of control over how they age vs. Millennials (48%) and Gen X (43%).
Introducing the Healthspan Hacker
The research uncovers a new uber-healthspan consumer, “Healthspan Hackers,” who use modern technology — wearables, GLP-1s and cosmetic treatments — not as quick fixes, but as part of a holistic health strategy. Healthspan Hackers are highly engaged, data-savvy, influential and feel a high sense of control over their aging journey. This segment is age agnostic and includes both the young and the young at heart.
Insights defining healthspan
The study uncovered four core observations around the healthspan mindset, illuminating factors that empower and limit the ability to achieve it. These insights are essential to guide strategies that drive impact in the healthspan era.
Control as a Health Catalyst
A sense of control is a health and wellness activator. Personal power (aka agency) is rooted in financial security and healthcare access and is amplified by social connection and health technology. People who feel in control are more likely to actively care for their physical and mental health.
Affordability and Access
The ability to achieve optimal healthspan is impacted by foundational issues of affordability, access to healthcare and whether a person has health insurance. Our findings lay bare the stark reality that financial strain and the lack of essential services create critical barriers that make healthspan a luxury for many.
The Social Connection Multiplier
Social connections are a powerful healthspan predictor. People with strong social ties exhibit healthier habits, better mental strength and a greater sense of control over their health. Loneliness, however, emerges as a significant healthspan barrier. Further, the “social media paradox” reminds us that real-world community offers something digital connections often cannot, which profoundly impacts health.
The Trust Gap
AI-driven search is gaining ground as a trusted source for health and wellness information. While social media platforms are also highly trafficked for health information, a hierarchy of trust for these platforms is revealed. People across generations continue to use AI and social media for discovery and awareness, but healthcare professionals (HCPs) remain the unwavering authority for information and decision making.
Seizing the Healthspan Opportunity
The focus on healthspan is a significant redefinition of how people are approaching health and aging. It’s driven by proactivity and a desire for personalized, connected and empowering experiences. It’s more than a trend; it’s a seismic shift that impacts every aspect of the health & wellness industry. Brands that learn to empower this new healthy aging paradigm will not only succeed, they’ll help shape a healthier future.
