Having blazed an impressive career path marked by curiosity, an eagerness to understand the lived experiences of others and a purpose to use the “power of the pen” to make her impact, Trish Backes, Group Senior Vice President and Midwest/West Virtual Market Co-Lead for GCI Group, was recently named in the MM+M Women to Watch Class of 2025.
The MM+M Women to Watch program, part of its Women of Distinction Awards, celebrates an exclusive group of healthcare marketing executives who are making an outsized impact on their companies and the industry. Trish is recognized for having earned a reputation as a standout agency leader and client counselor, and for her unique ability to bridge the gap between business and communications. With both in-house and agency experience, she is an important industry voice and valued partner to biotechnology and medical technology companies.
Trish first joined GCI Group to work on a Bay Area biotech client in 2007. After holding a series of high-profile positions on both the agency and client side, she then rejoined GCI Group’s uncapped communications in 2022. In her role, she helps drive holistic communications strategies that unleash client growth and advance innovation within the healthcare ecosystem. Additionally, as co-lead for GCI Group’s Midwest/West virtual market, she offers mentorship and guidance to employees who live outside a commutable distance to an office, creating a collaborative and connected culture.
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Trish during both her tours at GCI, one early in her career and now,” says Kristin Cahill, Global CEO, GCI Group. “She really is a unicorn in the agency world — she deeply understands the client’s perspective but also brings a consultant’s eye to strategy and industry trends. Trish immerses herself in her clients’ business and redefines what it means to be proactive and obsessive about their world.”
In addition to the MM+M recognition, Trish was named a “Top 50 Women Leaders of Minnesota” by Women We Admire in 2023 and 2024.
