In our last edition of the Digital Impact, a series from GCI Health’s digital, social media and technology experts, we looked at how to increase large language model (LLM) visibility on LinkedIn and YouTube. Now, we’re turning to the next challenge: Credibility. As institutional trust continues to decline and healthcare consumers move away from a single authoritative voice, patient communities are quickly becoming places where credibility is built and reinforced.
Patients and their loved ones are actively seeking online communities for connection, validation and information. Here, we explore how healthcare companies can build strategies for owned content, AI optimization and paid media to adapt and excel in this new ecosystem.
From Absolute Authority to Community Connector
Today’s new digital health frontier is built on distributed trust and community. Increasingly, people are viewing social connectivity as vital to good health. In GCI Health’s recent Healthspan report, nearly three-quarters of respondents (73%) said social connections and community involvement matter for their health as they age. Platforms are racing to meet that demand, formalizing patient communities into structured spaces where patients and caregivers can share stories and advice.
This represents the next evolution of digital engagement, where an organization’s influence shifts from distributor of content to convener of communities, building and hosting micro-communities where credibility is established. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok are accelerating this transformation with features like broadcast channels — “one-to-many” messaging tools within their apps that allow for deeper, more private engagement between creators and their followers.
What’s Shaping Community and Patient Engagement?
- Community Is the New Content: According to a study cited by ADWEEK, “76% of people are more likely to trust content shared by ‘normal’ people over ‘branded advertising.’” This underscores the clear demand for authentic, shared experiences over one-sided corporate messaging.
- Human Spaces as Credibility Checks: A recent survey from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners found that while more than 80% of Americans are seeking health information online, only 5% are very confident in the accuracy of AI-provided information. This creates a critical opening for organizations to create communities that become a trusted “second stop” to validate AI-driven information for people preparing to have conversations with their healthcare providers.
- Passive Awareness to Owned Communities: Campaigns that leverage paid media to retarget into an owned community space (like a private group or social channel) show three to four times higher conversion rates than traditional disease-state awareness ads. Paid media adds greater value when it can establish deeper connections with patients.
The Takeaway
Credibility in health is no longer centralized; it’s distributed among peers, creators, AI summaries and HCPs. For pharma, the opportunity is to become a consistent, reliable and essential presence alongside the communities where distributed trust is already forming. The organizations that build this first will define what health influence looks like for the next decade, positioning themselves as authentic partners who give a voice to the community.
Drive Your Impact
- Become the Convener: Expand your engagement strategies to include intentional community building. Identify a niche patient or caregiver group and develop a micro-community strategy. Pilot a program on a platform with private features, like Instagram’s broadcast channels or a dedicated Facebook group, and empower community members to share their stories and lead conversations.
- Be the Trusted Second Stop: As patients increasingly begin their health journey with AI, they still want trusted sources for validation. Secure your place in those critical moments by pairing a generative engine optimization (GEO) strategy with expert-led, HCP-partnered content. This helps brands surface in initial AI-driven searches and serve as the authoritative destination for confirmation.
- Retool Paid Media for Impact: Evolve your paid media key performance indicators (KPIs) beyond pure reach and impressions. Design campaigns with the primary goal of driving users into your owned community spaces. Use your ad creative to highlight the value of joining the community — access to peers, exclusive content or direct Q&As with experts — and measure success by the growth and engagement of your community.
